The Cold War: Lord of the Flies in context

If we could travel back to the post WWII decade of the 1950s, we would most likely fear the prospect of atomic attack. These pervasive and often irrational fears were prevalent in the Cold War era of Golding's Lord of the Flies.
Posters, videos, and drills were commonplace at schools, businesses, and even at home. You would be used to this diet of propaganda fed to you by the government and media.

Task: Look at these images and consider how they would shape this atmosphere of fear? Create a Word document and copy and paste each image before answering these questions. Your final piece should only be a page in length, so make sure your images are scaled correctly.

1. What purpose does each image or video serve? To inform? To protect? To scare?
2. How did the artists/producers go about meeting this purpose? Explain.
3. What would your reaction have been after seeing this image or video in 1954?
4.. How might these images and videos address the theme of “man’s inhumanity to man”?
